Project Detail

Flood Risk Assessment and Hydraulic Modeling – River L’Aire, Geneva

Location

Geneva, Switzerland

Project Type

Hydraulic Modeling and Flood Risk Assessment

Project Summary

This study presents a hydraulic analysis of the River L’Aire in Geneva, Switzerland, conducted using the HEC-RAS hydraulic modeling system. The analysis evaluated flood risks and riverbank stability along a 5.36 km river reach, considering flood scenarios with return periods of 10, 30, 100, and 300 years.

The study investigated hydraulic behavior under extreme discharge conditions and identified vulnerable river sections susceptible to flooding and erosion.

The results supported the evaluation of flood protection strategies including:

  • Riverbank stabilization measures
  • Flood diversion structures
  • Retention basins and levee systems
  • Reinforcement of existing riverbank protections

Technical Approach

The hydraulic modeling involved:

  • Development of a HEC-RAS hydraulic model
  • Simulation of multiple flood scenarios
  • Flow velocity and floodplain mapping
  • Evaluation of erosion-prone river sections
  • Assessment of structural flood mitigation strategies

Engineering Contribution

This hydraulic modeling study was conducted by Eng. Mesfin Tewolde, a civil engineer specialized in irrigation engineering and hydrology, based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Eng. Mesfin collaborates with Aqua Nile Engineering Consultancy as a remote technical advisor, contributing advanced hydraulic modeling expertise and analytical support for water resources and river engineering projects.

Through this collaboration, Aqua Nile integrates:

  • Field engineering experience in dam and irrigation infrastructure
  • Advanced hydraulic modeling and flood risk analysis
  • International engineering expertise developed through work in Europe
